It had been a few years since I had last really seen Ryan in person, but it came as no surprise when the face that peaked out through the steel folding door had the same youthful grin I had come to remember. I few years older and many years more akin to his craft, Ryan has built a small niche for himself in the growing young industry in Gowanus Brooklyn. Here, alongside the canal, Ryan creates one of a kind furniture and home goods out of Steel, Brass, Bronze, Marble, Wood, and likely a handful more materials that I didn't think to list.
We walked around the neighborhood a bit while on a break and a quickly saw what he meant: He get's his marble and stone two doors away, the machine shop around the corner helps him if his CAD files don't work quite right, and a flurry of makers and artist stroll in through the open doors when the weather is nice. The community there is enough to love the space, but it also helps to have a ground level shop where you're getting hundreds of pounds of brass dropped at your door every week.
